The main points are:

• when the policy says your pet's cover is for life, does that mean life of your pet or life of the policy?
• Are you taking out a yearly policy or a lifelong policy?
  A lifelong policy for your pet will continue to protect your pet for a lifelong condition after one year, a yearly policy doesn't and you will not get cover from another insurance company after that year either, as the condition will be stated as an exclusion to any new policies taken out.
